AGM and Chairperson's Annual report

6/20/2012

The Centre's Management Committee, having promoted its AGM with stories in the local press about the threats to the venue's future and the importance of the current feasibility study, held the meeting on Monday evening with a sadly familiar low turn out from the local community.  Thankfully those present included some stalwart supporters of the centre and its hard-pressed management committee and warm appreciation was expressed for the committee's efforts over another difficult year.  A new member was voted onto the committee in the youthful form of Sophie Watts.  Welcome, Sophie!
The Chairperson's report on the year, available here, was followed by a presentation by Mel Witherden, community development consultant, of the interim findings of his feasibility study on the sustainability of Knighton Community Centre.  His report and recommendations, which could lead to dramatic changes in the centre being considered for the future, gave the audience much to think about and much discussion followed.
While much of the meeting concerned long term developments for the centre, one immediate crisis was not resolved: the new committee urgently needs a new treasurer.  If anyone out there in the community can help, they are asked to please get in touch by any means asap!
To finish with a return to radical visions for the centre's future, I offer below for your consideration the architect's impression of the centre that graced the 1984 invitation to its grand opening.   A sad reflection on the neglect of the intervening years.  The ornamental pond and lovely willow tree would have been a great improvement on the current council recycling centre, complete with heaps of rubbish bags piling up around the skips when collection is running late.
