Last weekend of events before move

Barring last minute hitches, the coming weekend's Flicks in the Sticks screening looks like being the last one in the centre for a while, as we have our long anticipated - and now rather reduced - refurbishment about to take place.  We expect to be in our temporary home of the Drill Hall, just a couple of  hundred metres away, until next May.  And our Flicks screenings will continue there during that period.
Friday's film is spectacular sci-fi in the shape of "The Martian" starring Matt Damon.  As usual, it's £4 entry, doors open at 7pm and there's wine, beer, tea, coffee and snacks at half time.

Appeal for volunteers!

A quick update...  More than two weeks after committee members met with Welsh Assembly funding body reps and convinced them to support our hastily put together "Plan B" to achieve some of the goals of the Community Hub concept on much reduced funding, we are still waiting for the all important minister's signature on a confirmation letter!

With just a verbal assurance that funding is virtually certain,  with the builder itching to get on site by the 21st and a deadline to complete all work by the end of the financial year, we have taken the decision to delay no longer and to begin clearing the building, putting in safe storage all that needs storing, taking down and selling off or junking anything we can't reuse, and making the move of our activities to the drill hall.  This began yesterday immediately after the market and will continue whenever any of us have time throughout this week.

If any Knighton folk can spare any time to help taking down, packing away, moving and possibly even a bit of decorating over at the drill hall if we can obtain permission, or if you have any storage space to offer (important one!), pleeeease contact us via this website, via our Facebook page or via our email asap.

Leisure Centre public meeting and beyond...

Today's County Times story
The disappointment of the failed bid to obtain Big Lottery funding for the Community Centre is now behind us. The tiny group of volunteers who run the centre is now working flat out daily to come up with an affordable "Plan B" that finds space for the town library and other services and is acceptable to our other main grant source, the Welsh Assembly (Powys County Council is already fully committed to our plan, with money on offer to replace our leaky roof, for which we are very grateful).
How appropriate then that the last one-off event booked into the centre for the time being was last Tuesday's very encouraging public meeting on the threatened closure of another important town facility, the leisure centre, when 480 Knightonians packed out the centre - the only venue in the region with the capacity for such a gathering.
Meanwhile our regular hirings and events will carry on for the time being, so all those who enjoy their Monday zumba, Welsh lessons, Slimming World, fitness, New Age Sport and karate, all those who attend Leg Club or would be lost without the twice-monthly markets and monthly auctions need not worry.
We'll let everyone know the instant we have news about the centre's future - and we hope that Knightonians will rally behind us as we work to ensure that perhaps the town's greatest asset is guaranteed a future in these difficult times.
