We are absolutely delighted to be able to announce that Knighton and District Community Centre is one of 11 projects across Wales to receive a grant from the latest round of the Big Lottery People and Places Programme. The funding of £23,730 is for a capital development grant - which is just the first stage of the Centre applying for a full grant to fund its “Big Ren” project.
The grant will enable us to complete the preparatory capital work in order to submit an application for the refurbishment and redevelopment of the community centre. The aim is to create a thriving community hub that can better accommodate existing activities as well as a range of new activities and displaced community services. This grant, over one year will pay for professional fees and planning fees. Chair of the Knighton and District Community Centre Committee Karen Plant stated that “we are so delighted and excited to be awarded this grant. This is a significant first step in achieving our ambitious aspirations for the Centre.” Karen went on to say that “The Management Committee has shown incredible commitment and drive in its bid to taking the Centre on to its next stage of development. We have fast growing usage and demand which we are now having difficulty fully accommodating because of the outdated design and poor fabric of the building, and this grant will be the start of us addressing these and many other issues, necessary if the Centre is to survive long into the 21st Century.” Once the building design and planning stage has been fully completed the Committee plans to submit for the full grant, which, if successful, will enable the Centre to become a Community Hub designed to help combat the effects of poverty and support regeneration. The longer term aim is to focus on the co-location of services, young unemployed, young families and support for the elderly, along with the long standing and traditional uses of the Centre, such as entertainment, cultural and sports activities and supporting other organisations and charities to thrive in the town. TEME VALLEY ENVIRONMENT GROUP
presents "DIRTY OIL" A film about the Canadian Tar Sands by Leslie Iwerks Wednesday February 11th 7.30pm at the Community Centre Bar These days the bulk of America's oil supply comes not from the Middle East but from tranquil Canada – and specifically from the aboriginal lands of northern Alberta. Leslie Iwerks's impassioned and exhaustive documentary examines the effects of this tar-sand exploration. "You can't have the world's largest energy project in your backyard without messing up the backyard," shrugs one local activist. Iwerks's camera leads us on a tour of the smokestacks, churned earth and poisoned streams. In under a decade, a slice of forest the size of Florida has been quietly converted into moonscape. All welcome Tea and coffee available Entry by donation Coming to the intimate setting of Knighton Community Centre's bar on Feb 20th we have a treat for fans of folk/roots/Americana in the form of Canadian duo Pharis and Jason Romero. Some of you may have heard their very fine live set on BBC Radio 3's "World on 3" show but you may not be aware that their two albums to date have won a string of awards, including New/Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Awards, Americana Album of the Year at the 2012 Independent Music Awards (for their debut album A Passing Glimpse) and Traditional Singer of the Year at the 2013 Canadian Folk Music Awards (for their second album Long Gone Out West Blues).
Doors open 8pm and tickets cost £8. It should be a great night. |
