May 25th Art Workshop

5/27/2013

The Community Centre chose the special May 25th Community Market as the ideal time to hold a long-planned art workshop, in the hope of increasing involvement of the town's young people in the centre's activities.
Dominique Jones and Sophie Watts organised a morning of activities around the theme of "Painting the Town", designed to produce a final collaborative artwork.
Those who attended had a great time and at the end everyone agreed that the clock tower painting produced was pretty impressive!

The May 25th Spring into Summer market

The May 25th "Spring into Summer" Market was a great success, thanks to loads of enthusiastic input by many of our regular stallholders, contributions from local community groups and musicians and some glorious sunshine.
Craft and art workshops for the youngsters produced some lovely spring flower garlands and pictures of Knighton, as well as drawing in some new and younger visitors to the market.  Musicians entertained us all, while the Wool Against Weapons campaigners staged a "knit-in" aiming to add to the required 7 miles of pink scarf required to link the Aldermaston and Burghfield nuclear weapons establishments.  The local environmental group, TVEG, ran a seedling swap  and pupils from Whitton Primary School ran a fundraising stall.  Then there was a raffle with some great prizes donated by stallholders, a lucky dip and a "Name the Sheep" competition to establish what we are to call our new logo.  In short, it was a real community affair with lots of activity and a great atmosphere.
Now we have to decide when our next "special" market will be.
Oh, by the way, the woolly shopper on our logo is now officially named Shauna Sheep.

The Saturday May 4th   table sale at Knighton Community Centre raised a total of £327, partly to help with the centre’s running costs, while £130 is being given to the Teme Valley Environmental Group to support the organisation’s “Edible Knighton” project.  This project has already planted 23 fruit and nut trees around the town and is hoping to work with other groups to extend the scheme.  If you are interested in joining in this exciting enterprise phone 01547 528833.

As part of this project, TVEG has very recently replaced the old fencing to the rear of the Community Centre with espaliered apple and pear trees and the group is now working on establishing a herb garden outside the centre’s smaller functions venue, the Reynolds Room.  The £130 represents a big thank you to TVEG from the centre’s management committee and will assist with funding the next phase of the “Edible Knighton” project.  The money was presented by Karen Plant and Ann Dodd, Chairperson and Secretary of the Community Centre Management Committee, to Anne Mary Davies of TVEG when they met up today at the site for the herb garden.
