Knighton Community Market goes mad for Hallowe'en

10/25/2014

Knighton Community Market went slightly mad today with lots of dressing up and fun activities, not to mention a kids' craft workshop, live music in our ever-popular cafe and 26 stalls loaded with local produce and crafts.  A great time was had by all.
There are just three markets remaining before Christmas!  On Nov 22nd live music will be supplied by the Border Reelers who blend
melodeon, fiddle, harp and guitar with fine harmony singing.  And on December 13th we're in full Christmas mode with carols provided by the massed voices of the Llanfair Singers.  Beats shopping at Tesco any day.

Indoor Paintball anyone?

If you're aged 9 to 14 and you like throwing yourself around and going wild, then next Thursday the Community centre has a treat for you!  Combat Rats present an afternoon of Reball - that's er... paint-free paintballing.  Check out the video to get the idea.  It costs £2 to take part and all equipment is provided.  Just turn up on the day.  The fun starts at 1pm and runs to 4pm.  For more info phone Geoff on 07500 973033.  I just wish they'd let 60-somethings have a go...

Top quality American roots music in the Comm bar on October 26

10/15/2014

If you saw Beverly Smith and John Grimm in the Comm bar recently you're probably itching for more authentic American roots music, so you'll want to put Sunday October 26th on your calendar.  If you missed it, you missed a treat so don't make the mistake twice.
On the 26th the bar is the venue for a live performance by the Appalachian band whose session on his BBC Radio 2 show was described by Bob Harris as "gorgeous".  UK Folk music's bible, fRoots magazine, has judged them to be "First class!"  And if you want further convincing, just watch the video taken from a BBC film of the Celtic Connections festival.
Admission is just £10 and entrance can be guaranteed by phoning 01544 350407 / 01597 825390 or 01547 820315.  Things kick off at 8.00pm and snacks will be available. If you miss out on Furnace Mountain live in Knighton on a Sunday night because Downton Abbey's on the telly then you need to seek medical advice.

A very special Community Market anniversary!

Knighton Community Market celebrated a rather special anniversary last week.  In addition to the usual variety of stalls, shoppers were treated to extraordinary live music from Trovatori, a duo whose mix of grand opera, love songs and classics from the shows completely bowled over stallholders and shoppers alike. All of this was organised to celebrate the fact that on October 11th David and Leonie Miller were bringing their wonderful cafe to Knighton Community Market for the 100th time!  Not only did David and Leonie lay on some special music for the occasion, but they also baked and gave everyone present a slice of a very special anniversary cake free of charge.
The success of their efforts over the years is demonstrated at every market by the numbers of regulars who meet friends and neighbours over a drink and a snack, whatever the weather outside. Thank you David and Leonie for helping make Knighton Community Market a little bit special.

The next market takes place on October 25th when stallholders will be putting on lots of special attractions, not to mention some silly costumes, to celebrate Halloween.  A children's craft workshop will be held in the reynolds Room where participants can have fun making all manner of spooky things, including masks to enter in the mask competition at the end of the morning.  Masks made at home can be brought in on the day and there will also be a prize for the best Halloween fancy dress.

Romance! Operetta!  West End stage classics! All at the market on Oct 11.

At the next Knighton Community Market on October 11th shoppers can expect something really quite different in the way of entertainment in the cafe area.
We always like to provide some live music, mostly in the folk style, but this time we will be in a more romantic mood (at a market!  On a Saturday morning?) with that mood created by a duo known as Trovatori.  Their website promises intimate love songs, romantic operetta and West End classics, among other delights!
The duo are most often to be seen entertaining on cruise liners around the world so we are honoured to be able to bring them to Knighton.  They plan to sing between 10am and noon, with a little time out to do a bit of shopping themselves.  Let's hope they find some nice locally produced goodies.
