Meet Afghanistan's most prolific movie director!

Here's news of an exciting film coming up next week. On Saturday 17th Feb (Note that it's not our normal Friday film night) we have a funny and also touching documentary about Afghanistan's most popular and prolific film director.... Salim Shaheen, though unknown outside Afghanistan (until now), has made and distributed more than a hundred movies, working on shoestring budgets, undeterred by rocket attacks, riots or religious fundamentalism. This film follows him as he films his 111th movie, colourfully blending sub-Bollywood action, comedy and lip-synced song-and-dance numbers just the way his Afghan audiences like, in locations where making movies really is a dangerous business!
As usual the film starts at 7.30pm in the Reynolds Room and entrance is just £4. And, because we really want to make this a bit of a special movie-going night, we're offering Afghan style snacks in the interval FREE OF CHARGE. We're already perfecting our boulani recipe in readiness (Google it!).
So... an at times hilarious, heartwarming and touching film about Afghanistan.  Come and see "The Prince of Nothingwood" and be amazed.

I saw Nothingwood at Knighton Community Centre last night - an extraordinary film. What was wonderful was that in spite of the grim reality that is Afghanistan today - the strong determination and creative spirit shone through, loud and clear. The film documented the life of an Afghan film maker and teams of actors determined to make films with hardly any resources, and continually facing seemingly insurmountable problems - for example, the very traditional attitudes to women and banning of film by the Taliban, not to mention rocket attacks and gunfire.
The other joy of the evening was the delicious Afghan food which we could try. Some particularly good meat balls and vegetarian equivalents, as well as flatbreads filled with either onions or potatoes. Very good.
I came away feeling I knew more about both the culture and the environment of the country, and what it was like after thirty years of war.
A very good evening. Thank you!
